ART STATEMENT FOR GREG SEAGRAVE

My art is a personalized visual construct that’s executed like a design composition. I pay special attention to balancing color, shape, line, and form into a complex maze of paint, sometimes painstakingly brushed on, sometimes thrown in a frenzy, whatever achieves the effect that I'm looking for - there are no rules here!

When I begin a painting, I have found over the years that there are no sets of rules I stick to. I may go for a walk and various colors might catch my eye, looking at flowers, trees, maybe something someone is wearing. Sometimes I used to walk around downtown Indy and look at nothing but shadows on the various buildings and that would give me ideas. Then there are other times I walk straight into my paint room and begin working. A lot of times, I draw out most of my composition on the canvas before I lay paint to any of it, other times I just grab the brush and feel my way through things, depending on an inner language that tells me where to go and when to stop.

I’ve utilized many influences over the years, certainly the abstract expressionists of the 1940's - 1950's were a source of inspiration as were the neo-Expressionists in the 80's, which many people see when they look at my art. However, not wishing to emulate anybody, I would like to think that I paint with my own brush!

Probably my main influence is music which has always been a constant when I paint. I’ve lived through decades of music, a personal connection of experiences remembered and life well lived. Dick Clark coined the phase, "Music is the soundtrack of your life," and that is so true.

My paintings are a massive array of color, line, form, and shape. I utilize an inner energy turned into a personalized style of complexity - "Busy art for a busy world," I hope you enjoy viewing it, thank you for your consideration. If art isn't adventurous, it's just boring!
